Susanne Vielmetter Berlin Projects is pleased to present our third exhibition in Berlin with new works by Steve Roden. Featuring paintings, drawings and a sculpture, the exhibition explores Roden’s interest in the relationship between systems of sound and visual form. Roden, who is also known internationally for his experimental sound sculptures and installations, creates layered paintings and sculptures that conflate systems of music with visual concepts. His work emerges from complex sets of self imposed rules, much in the spirit of the systematic approach of early conceptual minimalism, and then folds highly intuitive strategies into its process. The current body of work attempts a visual translation of a 12 page classical music score: the musical notes can equal a number of marks on the canvas, a number of sides to a shape, a certain color sequence, an amount of time, a number of physical movements, all in the service of generating abstract images and forms that could not have been birthed without imposing the score upon the process of painting.

The two drawings in the exhibition came out of an interest in the insertion of a 'realistic' image - in this case an audio speaker. “I wanted to see all of the messy situations of discomfort that might come out of the collision of abstract visual forms and recognizable imagery - and how a "photo" could potentially create a state of flux, where the images fall into abstraction, fold into landscapes, or hover as architectural and diagrammatic spaces. The sculpture "turning music into mountains" was generated by laying an old map of Buddhist pilgrimage sites in India over a blank sheet of music score paper. Each pilgrimage site was given a corresponding musical note equivalent, which then determined the height of each location. The heights were spun together in an intuitive web with plaster and dowels, their height predetermined, their path of connectedness totally intuitive. The colors were based on research related to the musical scale and synaesthesia from various sources.”

Steve Roden received his MFA at the Art Center College of Design Los Angeles. He has had solo exhibitions at the Henry Art Museum in Seattle; at the National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), Athens; at the San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco; at the Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art and Science, Fresno; at the Alyce de Roulet Williamson Gallery, Art Center College of Design, Pasadena; at the Tang Museum at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs; at Pomona College Museum of Art, Claremont and the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara, among others. His work has been included in “Park Sounds”, Serpentine Gallery, London; in “sounds like drawing”, the Drawing Room, London; in “In Resonance”, Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; in "Listen" (part of “Sons et Lumiere”), Pompidou Center, Paris; in "Specific Objects: The Minimalist Influence", Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, La Jolla; in "Treble", The Sculpture Center, New York; in "About Painting", The Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs; in "southwestNET: PHX/LA", Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, Scottsdale; in "audiolab 2", Centre George Pompidou Museum, Paris; in "Deceptive Translations - Jeff Elrod and Steve Roden", University of San Antonio, San Antonio; in "Resonance 2", Stadtgalerie, Saarbrucken; in "Snapshot", UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles & Miami MOCA, Miami, and in "Fall Selections 99", the Drawing Center, New York,. Wir freuen uns, neue Arbeiten des amerikanischen Künstlers Steve Roden in unserem Ausstellungsraum in der Holzmarktstraße in Berlin Mitte präsentieren zu können. Die Ausstellung, die neue Malerei, Zeichnungen und Skulpturen von Steve Roden zeigt, widmet sich den Verbindungen, die zwischen akustischen und visuellen Systemen entstehen können. Steve Roden, der international auch durch seine experimentellen Sound-Skulpturen und Installationen bekannt wurde, entwickelt vielschichtige Gemälde und Skulpturen, in denen sich Musik mit visuellen Konzepten verbindet. Seine Arbeiten entstehen vor dem Hintergrund selbst auferlegter komplexer Regelwerke, die dem strengen Geiste des frühen konzeptuellen Minimalismus folgen, aber auch ein rein intuitives Vorgehen im künstlerischen Prozess zulassen. Die aktuelle Werkgruppe versucht, ein klassisches Musikstück auf eine visuelle Ebene zu übertragen: Die einzelnen Noten entsprechen dabei bestimmten Zeichen auf der Leinwand, verschiedenen Seitenflächen einer Form, einer bestimmten Farbfolge, einer zeitlichen Sequenz oder einer bestimmten Anzahl physischer Bewegungen. Was entsteht, sind abstrakte Bilder und Formen, die ohne die strengen Vorgaben der Komposition, die den malerischen Prozess bestimmen, nicht entstanden wären.

Die beiden Zeichnungen in der Ausstellung sind, so Roden, aus dem Interesse heraus entstanden, ein 'realistisches' Bild – in diesem Fall einen Lautsprecher – einfließen zu lassen. „Ich wollte diese chaotische, unbequeme Situation provozieren, die aus der Kollision von abstrakten visuellen Formen mit wiedererkennbaren Bilderwelten entstehen kann. Ich möchte sehen, wie eine Fotografie diesen fließenden Zustand erzeugen kann, in dem die Bilder in Abstraktion umkippen, als Landschaften erscheinen oder den schwebenden Zustand von architektonischen und schematischen Räumen annehmen. Die Skulptur „Turning Music Into Mountains“ ist entstanden, indem ich eine alte Landkarte mit buddhistischen Pilgerstätten in Indien über ein leeres Notenblatt gelegt habe. Jeder Pilgerstätte wurde eine Note zugeordnet, die dann die Höhe eines jeden Ortes festgelegt hat. Die Höhen wurden versponnen zu einem Netz aus Gips und Pflöcken, deren Höhe genau vorgegeben war, während die Art der Verknüpfungen aber vollkommen intuitiv entstanden ist. Die Farben basieren auf einer Recherche im Bereich von Tonleitern und Synästhesien.“

Steve Roden graduierte mit einem MFA am Art Center College of Design, Los Angeles. Er hatte Einzelausstellungen am Henry Art Museum in Seattle; am National Museum of Contemporary Art (EMST), Athen; am San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco; im Fresno Metropolitan Museum of Art and Science, Fresno; in der Alyce de Roulet Williamson Gallery, Art Center College of Design, Pasadena; im Tang Museum at Skidmore College, Saratoga Springs; im Pomona College Museum of Art, Claremont und dem Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara.
